Is there any way I can power an internal drive externally?

I am adding a drive to my DirecTV HD DVR and since internal drive are much cheaper than external ones, I want to go with that. However, all the ones that I am looking at all have sata power, which my DVR can not provide. Are there any kinds of adapters that I can use, or even a combination of adapters? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I think the main problem is that you're looking at the wrong kind of drives. If the DVR doesn't have SATA power connectors it probably doesn't have SATA data connectors either. Look at PATA drives and they will most likely have the connectors that your DVR needs. PATA drives were the older standard and are also called IDE drives, Ultra ATA, ATA100, or ATA133. Since SATA drives are the newer standard, the PATA drives are becoming harder to find. I'd suggest trying www.Newegg.com or www.TigerDirect.com, they are both excellent online resellers and both have some PATA drives still available, although the number of choices is getting slim.
Pricewatch is another place that you can look for drives, but look at more than just the prices, make sure the drive is a good brand and reliable, and also make sure the seller has a good reputation before buying. ResellerRatings is a good site to look up a seller's reputation.
If the available PATA drives aren't big enough for your needs or you can't find one suitable for whatever reason, save yourself the headaches and spend the extra money for an external drive. As far as external drives, some aren't that much more expensive, but you also have the option to buy your own external enclosure and put in the size and type drive that you want and need which might save you a few dollars to do it yourself.
