Internet reference: http://www.articlealley.com/article_1107614_45.html Editor: Kim About the Author Exposure Times for Night Film Photography with Holga? I am going to be working on a project for class and I will be doing night photography with the Holga 120N and the Holga WPC (Wide Pinhole Camera) and will be shooting with a variety of film speeds and types. I will be using 120 BW & Color film with ISOs of 400, 800, & 3200. I anticipate that I will be shooting with Full and half moon as my source of lighting at night and I have little Idea of how much I should exposure the film for. Can anyone please help me out? Thank you.
David M's answer is good if you are trying to take photos of the moon itself. If you are trying to take photos of the landscape (or buildings or trees, etc.) with the moon as your light source, but not your main subject, then the sunny 16 rule will absolutely not work. I'm assuming that you don't have any hand-held light meters available to use, or borrow from school, right? Another good substitution for a hand-held light meter is the light meter in an SLR camera. You can set the SLR to the aperture you're using on the Holga, and find out what shutter speed you need. The best advice I can give you, if you can't get a hold of any kind of light meter, is to bracket A LOT. Depending on how cloudy the night is, what phase of the moon, how close you are to a city, the exposure can vary from several minutes to several hours. Definitely shoot negative film instead of slide film, because at least that way you have a little more exposure latitude. If the moon is your ONLY source of light (no ambient street lights, etc.) then you might need up to 1/2 hour or more at ISO 400, and that's with the 120N. A pinhole camera would need much, much, longer. (The 120N has an aperture of f/11, most pinhole cameras have an aperture of something like f/128 or f/180!) Arts notes Thanks for visiting!
