How can I make night vision work?

I just installed a Radioshack security camera that has infrared nightvision technology, but it only works at a VERY close range (your hand has to be less than a foot in front of the camera for it to work). Since the camera is looking over about 20 feet of space, this is not very effective, so how can I make expand the range of the nightvision camera?
