How to find out if power supply is toasted?

I assume that the power supply on my PC is fried but I want to make sure. Is there a tell-tale sign I need to look for? What about plugging it in and then putting a tester on the plugs that come out of it?

yes you can test the power supply with a Multimeter....you can pick one up at wal-mart for about 20.00bux....what you do is build the pc out of the case....put your motherboard on a cardboard box, have the cpu and the heatsink and fan installed and 1 stick of ram and a video card if you have one....hook the power wire from the case to the motherboard and plug in the 20+4 power plug and the 4pin or 8pin power plug for the cpu.....now check the psu power plug for power...
