My son stuck a paper clip into the USB port on my computer and it appears to have died. Why?

The port died or the computer died? Both are possible. Well, the USB port is always receiving current of at least 400mW so, metal + current = short. In a best case scenario it would only take the port with it. In a worst case scenario the charge goes back to the motherboard and causes damage there though I can't see it going beyond the USB host controller but if it did... we're talking about a mess. I know of other cases like this where the port went... or where the whole computer went or where all the USB ports broke. This is why you don't leave computers around children, children + computers = bad. And I'll really be in a situation if I ever have kids... I have nothing but computers, computer hardware and other sensitive components around me.

That's just a guess on my part. I've never stuck a paper clip in a USB port but it's not something I would want to try.
