What kinds of armor did the "barbarians" have during the Roman Conquest?

I'm wondering like whatkinds of armor different tribes(i.e.Celts, Picts, Huns, Germans, Vikings, Goths, Dacians, Vandals, etc.) had between several hundred years A.D. and several hundred years B.C.

Armor was expensive across all cultures, but classical armor varied little in fundamental makeup. In Greece and parts of Italy, 'muscle' shaped bronze cuirasses were all the rage for affluent fighters and later generals for a time. For those who could not afford bronze (which was considerably expensive because of copper's natural rarity), leather and hardened cloth armor could protect against less-threatening wounds. Very few cultures willingly fought naked (Spartan hoplites being a notable exception), and even the poorest of soldiers would at least afford themselves at least a small shield regardless of whether they ever intended to use it or not. Javelin or sling armed skirmishers, including those in Roman service, often went into battle with little more than the mentioned shields. Going into battle unarmored was the result of poverty, rather than an overzealous belief in invincibility.

However, the Celts were actually well known as the creators of iron based chain mail armor that originated in antiquity. Chain mail's construction was a very expensive and tedious process that required considerable skill, time and fuel. It did though, create armor that did not constrict its user as bronze cuirasses did. I also provided excellent protection from most then contemporary weapons with nigh immunity from swords and superb resilience against broadhead arrows from the 'stiff' bows of most Western cultures. As previously implied, only rich warriors could afford it.

Just as the Romans copied swords from invading Gauls and later Iberians, they also copied chain mail designs from their northern neighbors and made them en masse for sale to legionnaires; albeit without the superior iron working skills of the Celts. Though a form of segmented plate armor (lorica segmentata) was later developed, it was never produced in numbers rivaling traditional chain mail. Being maintenance intensive and costly to construct, it did not last all but three centuries while the older chain mail retained its utility all the way into the late Middle Ages. Even then, true plate armor was made in one piece and of much stronger construction than anything the Romans would ever field.
