A video converter is used to convert video signals which are in a format compatible with a specific type of display. Depending upon the type of display format needed, a particular converter is used. Can a VGA cable carry a HD video signal?

Can a VGA cable carry a HD video signal, such as 720p or 1080i, from a pc to a HDTV? Or are componet HD cables/HDMI needed to carry a high-definition signal?

VGA is RGB analog component video. It is capable of carrying HD video signals (480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p). It is actually very similar to component video, which is also capable of carrying a HD signal. The difference is component video use YPbPr instead of RGB.

DVI and HDMI are digital video signals, which are also capable of carrying HD video signals. Since they are digital they can carry the signal longer distance without picking up interference. This makes DVI and HDMI preferable as it is a slightly better signal, however for the common person you will barely notice any difference between analog HD and digital HD.

The key to hooking up a computer to a HDTV is what connections are available on your computer and TV, and what resolution your graphics card is capable of outputting, and what resolutions your HDTV is capable of displaying. If you have VGA output on your graphics card and VGA input on your TV, as long as the graphics card can output a HD signal (some can only output certain HD resolutions), you can easily hook up your PC o your TV, same with DVI from your computer. You can also buy a DVI to VGA converter for pretty cheap if you have DVI on your computer, but VGA on your HDTV (although VGA is less common on a TV, and if it does have it it probably also has DVI or HDMI). HDMI is the same as DVI only it also can carry an audio signal on the same cable. This makes it the matter of a simple (cheap) converter from DVI to HDMI and vice-versa.

For example, my PowerMac G5 has DVI output, which I have connected directly to my HD projector. The max HD resolution that I can output from my current graphics card is 1080i, which is also the max my projector can display. Before I could afford a long enough DVI cable to output to my projector, I used a DVI to VGA adapter to connect to my projector with VGA. I was still able to get 1080i on my projector, however with the digital signal it is a bit clearer, especially at the 30 foot distance my computer sits from the projector. As I said, out of the many people I have had over to watch movies on my projector with me, I am the only one that noticed any difference when i switched from Analog to Digital, but I spend a lot of time manipulating video and studying the quality (its a hobby).
